Shane Beamer Teases Could Josiah Thompson Start At Left Tackle For South Carolina

Shane Beamer Teases: Could Josiah Thompson Start at Left Tackle for South Carolina?

The Gamecocks' Offensive Line Remains a Question Mark

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has hinted that Josiah Thompson could be in line to start at left tackle for the Gamecocks in 2023.

Thompson, a redshirt sophomore, played in 12 games last season, mostly on special teams. He saw limited action at left tackle in the season opener against Georgia State.

Thompson's Potential Role

If Thompson does start at left tackle, he would replace Dylan Wonnum, who started all 13 games at the position last season. Wonnum has since transferred to LSU.

Thompson is a 6-foot-8, 335-pounder from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was a three-star recruit in the 2021 class.

Beamer's Comments

Beamer has been complimentary of Thompson's progress during the offseason.

"Josiah has had a really good spring," Beamer said. "He's a big, physical guy who is still learning the position. But he's got a lot of potential."

Other Options at Left Tackle

If Thompson does not start at left tackle, there are other options for the Gamecocks.

  • Eric Douglas: A redshirt junior who has started 18 games at left guard.
  • Trai Jones: A redshirt sophomore who has played in 13 games at right tackle.
  • Jakai Moore: A true freshman who was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class.

Conclusion

The Gamecocks' offensive line is still a question mark, but Thompson could be a key piece to the puzzle. If he can continue to develop, he has the potential to be a starting left tackle in the SEC.
