Labour's Brexit plans: Starmer accused of misleading voters

Millions of Keir Starmer's voters think he is going to unpick Brexit despite Labour's plan to embrace life outside the European Union, a report has found.

In its determination to turn the page on Brexit Labour has ruled out rejoining the EU single market or customs union But it says it is still open to negotiating a new trade deal with the bloc.

However, the report by the UK in a Changing Europe think tank found that many voters believe Labour would seek to reverse Brexit if it wins the next election.

The report found that 40% of Labour voters believe the party would seek to rejoin the EU, while 23% believe it would seek to hold a second referendum on Brexit.

The findings suggest that Starmer may be facing a difficult balancing act in the run-up to the next election. He needs to convince voters that Labour has moved on from Brexit, while also not alienating those who still support leaving the EU.

The report also found that Labour's plans to improve the UK's trading relationship with Europe will have minimal impact on reducing the economic costs of Brexit.

The report said that Labour's plans would "not fully offset the negative economic consequences of Brexit" and that the UK would still be "worse off" outside the EU.
