Record-breaking Bayer Leverkusen march on with Mainz win
Xabi Alonsos Bayer Leverkusen ground out a win over Mainz to extend their unbeaten run to a seventh game.
The victory moved Leverkusen to within two points of leaders Bayern Munich, but the visitors made life difficult for the home side at BayArena.
After Xhaka had given Leverkusen an early lead, Mainz hit back through Kohr and looked the more likely to win the game for much of the second half.
However, Wirtz's late goal turned the game on its head and moved Leverkusen a step closer to their first Bundesliga title in over a decade.
